Affirmations and the Subconscious Mind
The subconscious is probably the most powerful force known to humanity, and it will perfectly replicate whatever is given it to create, based on the thoughts fed into it. ‘Self-talk’ is a nearly constant stream of thoughts, desires, judgments, observations, criticism of self and others that is ever-present in our subconscious.
Mind chatter might be a better word for it; left to its own devices, and without consciously examining and correcting the subconscious beliefs and emotions we all have, the mind will often devolve to the lowest form of communication, a kind of gossip. Since we know that thoughts – or more specifically programmed subconscious thoughts – create reality, it is crucial that we address this issue. The way to do this is to use affirmations to influence the subconscious mind patterns.

If we wish to achieve greatness, we must become aware of and learn to direct this self-talk into higher purposes. When we become consciously aware of any sabotaging statements that are being churned out in our minds without our permission, we can then consciously replace the negative statements with positive affirmations.
The key is to design and adopt affirmations that will counter any negative belief we hold in our subconscious mind. Maybe our parents didn’t love us. This can be the defining element of our life or we can use affirmations to counteract it that will build our feelings of self-worth. “I am lovable” is a simple affirmation intended to replace a negative emotion or belief that we are not. To make it more effective, include joyous emotion and gratitude – “I am so happy and filled with love for everyone and everything; I am lovable and I attract love and send out love to the entire Universe” is a good example of affirmation construction.
We can use affirmations to receive anything we want, and often we don’t have to do any deep psychoanalysis to root out our contradicting thoughts. You will notice, as you use the affirmation, “I am enjoying my new job,” that thoughts or emotions come up around it that seem to be negative, telling you that you don’t deserve a new job or other good things. Then you know that your affirming has some work to do on your sense of self-worth. Your affirmations will change to say something like “I am a good worker and I deserve a better job,” or “I am so happy with the job I have and I do wonderful work,” “The Universe is bringing me the best conditions for my work, right now.”
Remember that being grateful for what you already have is the surest way to get more of what you want.
You might notice that you are often making negative statements about yourself or your chances for success. Suppose you decided that you really want to go into an online business for yourself, but have become aware of self-talk statements such as “I’m no good with computers.” You would want to design an affirmation to deal with that, like “I love using computers and I’m very good with them.”
Daily positive affirmations work in the same way as negative self-talk. They prepare the mind for acceptance of certain conditions, whether by accident or design. You can feed positive affirmations into the conscious by numerous methods: simply saying them over and over to yourself, writing or drawing expressions of them, creating vision boards and mind movies, or purchasing any of a wide range of subliminal programming products, either computer-based or audio CD and pod casts.
But the best method of finding the right affirmations for you is to write them yourself. The important keys to remember are:
- Write the affirmation in positive language. Never say you ‘want’ something; the Universe defines ‘want’ as ‘lack’ and returns more of the same. “I am now enjoying my new job, car, relationship.”
- Make it as personal and detailed as possible. “I love my new red Lexus, I love the smell of the interior and how well it handles. I love having people see me drive down the street in my new red Lexus.”
- See and feel it as happening right now. Build in the excitement you will feel in that new car; feel it now as if it is already true.
- Include gratitude and positive desires for all concerned. Selfishness and resentment will only bring more of the same. Joy and gratefulness will, too.
- Ensure you carry out the affirmations daily. Continue affirming but wait in patience, certain that the Universe will bring your desire. Give your affirmations time to work, at least 60 to 90 days.
